Welcombe Golf Club 2019 Golf Season – Andrew Burton, Captain I have been sorting out my thermals and winter golfing gear! I cannot believe how quickly the summer season has come and gone and that any concerns and nerves I had prior to the start of the season were unwarranted. The support from Tom and his team, my fellow Captain's and the members has been superb and I am sure this will continue into next year’s season.
However, as you all know my key Captain's Charity was Myton Hospice. Currently through various golf competitions, Captain's Day, Club Matches, Raffles, Barn dance and Quiz night the club has helped me raise £3000. My ‘secret’ target was £5000 so with 5 months left this should be a breeze and by far the next major funding opportunity is the Club Presentation night on Friday 29th November. The club are pushing regular requests out to members to attend with/without partners to this main pre-Christmas event. It really should be a definite for all the members whom have won major competitions during the year. This year we are introducing a Charity Auction to the proceedings so I am going to be direct and ask those members coming along to bring their cheque books or cash (no credit card machine) just in case they fancy a bid. For those members unable to attend the evening we are going to provide the Auction prize list in the Club (with Carolyn) for a couple of weeks in advance of the evening where you have the opportunity to place a sealed bid. As ever I look forward to your kind support and generosity. An additional proportion of this year’s Charity funding is also assisting Morgan Jackson with his Junior and Disability coaching work. He has confirmed seven local schools including the Welcombe Hills School for junior coaching for next season. During this year Morgan and Ali have coached around 700 juniors at local schools and at the club. Additional charity money is assisting Morgan with purchasing equipment for teaching and allowing the Welcome Hills School to use our facility and Morgan and Ali’s time free of charge. The Lady Captain enjoyed her inaugural away weekend to St Pierre Golf club last weekend and it appears a good time was had by all made all the better by the fact that they were the only ladies at the venue! This Saturday will see the ladies playing their first Club Championship with a new honours board being created for this annual event. Our ‘Interactive Smart Quiz’ held at the club last Friday night was a great success with around 90 guests attending. Once all of the newbies had figured out the rules the Captain's tables put on a great show of general knowledge with the Senior Captain's table finishing 15th out of 15 teams; Lady Captain’s table 13th and my table a gallant 10th position. With the inclusion of a Raffle the evening raised £600 for the Charity with the winning team being the Myton Hospice team. People enjoyed this so much that we are planning to run a similar event next Feb/March, so for those that did not attend this will be your chance. A big thank you to Carolyn and the team for organising the evening. The knock-out competitions are drawing to a close and congratulations to all the winners. I think Iain Lythall may have to invest in a larger trophy cabinet based on his wins so far this year. We await the final pairs match result shortly to see if Jonty Edmonds can continue his successful golf season ably supported by the ‘old man’. I urge any members who have not yet signed up for the ‘Greenkeepers’ revenge competition on the 2nd November to do so. Other than it being a Texas scramble team format I have not a clue what Billy and his team have planned as payback to the members, so please be civil and polite to him in advance!
We finished our social match season with a total of 9 wins, 1 draw and 5 losses. A big thank you to all the members that supported me in these matches, they know who they are, and I am sure the matches will be a great success again next season.
Thank you for your time and enjoy your golf. Andrew Burton WGC Captain 2019.
