As the race for those all-important Ryder Cup points continues, we look at how one man overcame a three-shot deficit to maintain a standout season on Tour and thrust himself to the top of the Race to Dubai standings. As well as our other regular features, we take another trip down memory lane this week by looking at how far golf balls have progressed from yesteryear in one of our articles.

Quiz Night - 18th October

Three is the magic number

2019 is proving to be Austrian Bernd Wiesberger’s golden year after making it three wins on the European Tour in the last six months.

His latest triumph at the Italian Open sits nicely next to his Scottish Open and Made in Denmark trophies already in his cabinet from this year as he once again demonstrated his patience to prevail at Olgiata Golf Club, Rome.

Trailing Matthew Fitzpatrick by three-shots heading into Sunday, a fine bogey-free 65 was enough to get the job done and lead the Englishman home by a single shot on -16.

Fitzpatrick will rue a double-bogey on the ninth that proved to be his undoing despite an eagle chance at the seventeenth and a birdie opportunity at the eighteenth to take it to a playoff.

The victory propels Wiesberger to the top of the Race to Dubai standings and leaves him in pole position for a Ryder Cup spot - Impressive stuff from a man who missed the last seven months of last year with a wrist injury!

The round white thing...

Since the game began in the 15th century, there is one thing that has never changed – the ball being the only piece of equipment used on every shot. Despite this, it still gets a raw deal with some golfers viewing it as less important than the clubs used to hit it. So, we decided to take a look back and see how modern golf balls compare to those of yesteryear.

In the beginning

Feathery balls reigned supreme for over 200 years in the early days of golf, but even they are relatively new compared to the original hairy balls (guess what they were stuffed with!).

It's hard to imagine what it would be like playing with those balls these days, and even the later-developed Gutty and Haskell balls left golfers with little-to-no room for error.

Where we are today

With so many ball models available on the market, the fact Titleist has dominated for over a decade with its Pro V1 and Pro V1x offerings is pretty impressive.

The new Pro V1 for 2019 offers golfers a penetrating flight from a very soft feel, whereas the Pro V1x feels slightly firmer and launches higher - goes to show just how far ball technology has come!
