Captain’s Log Welcombe Golf Club 2019 Golf Season – Andrew Burton, Captain It is hard to believe that the summer golf season is gradually coming to an end. The final stages of the club knockout competitions are drawing to a close and congratulations to Kevin Shearsby and Pete McCloughlin for winning the Seniors Pairs. Once again, a big thank you to all the members that have supported my Captain’s Day and more recently the X-Country evening. Both events were raising money for Charity and between them we raised nearly £1300. The feedback from the X-Country event, including our lady members, has been really positive and we should keep a few of these fun events on our calendar. We have ideas for some other fun golf events and will keep you informed once confirmed.
Reports from both members and visitors on the condition of our golf course continue to generally be very positive. I know that we still have the usual complaints about the lack of pitch mark repairs and raking of bunkers and one would hope that as we operate a Resort Golf course that the majority of these issues can be blamed on visitors and not our members. Good to see the waterfall back in operation and although there are still regular pipe bursts with the old network, the weather this year is favouring Billy and his team. The new range ball machine is more positive news with Billy due to build an enclosed frontage for the shed together with a new hard area for cleaning off shoes to the rear. I still have an outstanding request, on the list with management, to purchase additional rakes for our bunkers. Fingers crossed. We have our last two friendly matches remaining in September, both home fixtures against the Forest of Arden and then Hinkley. Currently, we have seven wins from thirteen matches with one match halved. It is great to see new players joining the team for these matches and I look forward to ending the season with a couple of wins. Hopefully, you will be aware of the recent newsletters that we are running an ‘interactive’ quiz night on Friday, 18 October. Ideal team sizes are four to six people and we are aiming to run a small charity raffle on the evening. If you can pull a team together of friends/family or your regular roll-up teams it should be a fun competitive evening. We need prospective teams listed on the sheet on the notice board or speak to Carolyn. The end of year Dinner Dance on Friday, 29 November should be etched in your diaries especially if you are a trophy winner this year. This event has been extremely popular over the last two years and hopefully, we can repeat again this year. We are intending to run a Charity Auction during the evening with some great prizes on offer from some generous people and a lot of hard work from both Seniors and Lady Captains Mark Scruby and Carol Mckinney.
