Avon League Report Well, a day and match full of surprises for sure. So as mentioned in last week’s update, we faced The Warwickshire in a must-win game to challenge runaway leaders – Atherstone. The weather and course were good, with the team ready for battle. The Edmonds Father & Son combination led us off followed by a new partnership of Iain Lythal and Ash Minihane, myself and Maron Wyatt (who was on a 2pm finish curfew) went off next. Dave French and James Canning went off forth, Kristian Summerfield and Mark Moist next and last but not least Martin Hallam and Graeme “Flipper” Hogg (I’ll come back to this). This was going to be a tough battle against a very strong Warwickshire side that had the same incentive as us in winning to stay in contention of winning the title. The word on the course over the front nine was encouraging with four pairs up and two down, Jonty and Rob Edmonds smashed their opposition 6&5 followed by Lythal and Minihane with a great 4&2 win. Maron and I came back from three down to halve our match (finishing around 2:30pm, sorry Mrs Wyatt) followed by news that Moisty and Kristian had won ages ago 5&4 giving us a guaranteed win. Hallam and Hogg were three down on the turn but with plenty of holes and water left, we were hopeful for a win from them and a 5&1 victory. Now as Captain, not only am I responsible for picking the team but also safety is paramount for the players too. Whilst enjoying an orange juice in the clubhouse, I received a very worrying call from Martin Hallam on the course saying that his partner Graeme needed assistance as his trolley had parted company with him and made a last-ditch effort to drown itself in the 17th pond! Now, those of you that know Graeme well will be aware that our Graeme can be a little careful when wasting money and with shouts of “my wallet and car keys are in there” went haring off to rescue the trolley already heading for the depths of the pond. An emergency unfolded with staff and players heading up from the clubhouse to rescue priority one, the wallet and trolley then Graeme. After scrambling police helicopters and lifeboats, Graeme’s wallet was reunited with the owner and the big task of drying out all the coins, plus a quick count to make sure nothing was lost took place. In the meantime, the match was not finished and a squidgy wet Graeme battled on with his entourage of helpers through 17-18 and, although, very rare they lost the match down the 18th. As you will imagine, our Graeme got a little stick in the bar, but after a free pint from the bar it cheered him up no end. The match finished with a fantastic four and a half - one and a half victory and puts us three points behind Atherstone who play the last game on the same day as us; we need a little luck and a good win away to West Midlands on Saturday, 31 August. An eventful day that’s for sure… Jake Day

Pro-Am Unfortunately, due to a lack of entries, our Pro-Am has had to be cancelled. This is a great shame as it has been on the Midland Region schedule for a number of years but this year, a lack of support has meant we did not meet the minimum number required for the PGA to hold the event.

Mathematics can be a complicated subject with all that pi, algebra and calculus floating around, but there is one simple equation we can all understand: uncomfortable golf shoes = a miserable time for all
| FootJoy's ContourFIT shoe
Let’s break down this equation further The main problem here is that walking on hard ground for four hours/18 holes in the summer months can take its toll on our feet. Blisters and bleeding are common signs that something isn't quite right and the issue will only be exasperated if your golf shoes are worn, cracking or ill-fitting.
So, what’s the answer? After running the numbers through our super-computer, we end up with a pair of golf shoes that are designed for comfort, like FJ’s ContourFIT. The combination of an extra thick underfoot fit-bed with an Achilles pad will have you walking on cloud nine for the entirity of your round. Why not pop in the shop and try a pair on this summer? |
