A note from our Captain... Welcombe Golf Club 2019 Golf Season – Andrew Burton, Captain I hope all the members are enjoying their golf with the season up and running. I have been playing a lot of golf both at WGC and other courses but can honestly say that our home course compares favourably early season with most of the other courses I have played. Several fairways on other courses are still recovering from the 2018 summer drought. Hopefully, our course will gain from some much-needed rain over the next week.
Having started our club match season with a terrific 6 – 0 home victory against The Warwickshire, we sadly lost both our away matches at Hinkley GC (5-1) on Tuesday, 14 May and Maxstoke Park (3.5-2.5) on Tuesday, 28 May. Thanks to all the members that supported the club in these matches. This month we have three home matches so need to make use of this advantage. Anyone interested in playing any of our friendly matches please drop me a line. Our Barn Dance is seriously lacking uptake from club members – as things stand, we have more non-members confirmed which I have to say is a real shame when a number of members have mentioned the lack of social events! It would be great to see MORE members signing up for the event on Saturday, 29 June (posters around the club with details). If we do not get at least a further 20 tickets sold over the next week, we may have to CANCEL the event. The evening is open to both members and non-members, so please buy some tickets and invite your friends for what promises to be a fun evening. Please see myself, Carol McKinney or Club staff to purchase tickets at £20 per person. I am pleased to say that my Captains Weekend to Hawkstone Park in September (14th/15th) is virtually signed up. There may be one or possibly two spaces available subject to final confirmations this week so if anyone has forgotten or is interested give me a call. We have been discussing adding a few alternative golf events into this seasons calendar. A repeat of the three clubs and a putter (run last year) seems popular as does a 9-hole cross country event (late afternoon/evening during the summer). I would be grateful for any other suggestions or ideas from members.
Last Friday, I visited our local Myton Hospice in Warwick and handed over my first Charity cheque for £1000. After only two months of club events, this was a great achievement for the club and this money will fund 40 hours of specialist nursing care at the Hospice. Thank you to all the members and supporters of the club for their generosity. I have also set aside a first donation of £250 that Morgan and Ali can use to purchase golf kit to aid the sessions they are doing with both the Welcombe Hills School and their junior golf coaching development. They are now delivering golf coaching to six local schools which in turn brings both juniors and their parents to our club. Morgan has provided me with a list of golf equipment that will improve the delivery of both disability and junior coaching over the season and I am keen to help him achieve these targets. Following the Charity theme, the May draw for the sleeve of Titleist Pro V1 balls (£1 on the club shop desk) occurred on Saturday, 1 June and the lucky individual was none other than Mr Paul Tunnicliffe. We will continue to run this each month so don’t forget to enter.
