Captain’s log One month into my Captains year and the club generally appears to be operating smoothly, although I know behind the scenes Tom and his team are frantically trying to keep pace with new owner demands, ongoing course improvements and a busy program of club activity to help achieve their business targets for the year ahead. I have spent a couple of sessions with Billy gaining an insight into the daily and weekly issues they face; from an old fragile course irrigation infrastructure to managing the Hotel Gardens to headcount and other usual budget constraints. The new pumps in the pump house and new sprinklers on the greens are a step forward but occasionally the old course network of feeder pipes fails and then it is literally hand watering of greens and tee boxes. The new owners will be aware of the long-term investment the golf course needs but for now Billy and his team are doing their best to accommodate feedback from members and hopefully with the recent rain combined with warmer weather these areas of concern on the course will improve. I am pleased to report a resounding 6 – 0 victory in our first Club match at home against The Warwickshire on Saturday, 4 May. We now follow this with our first away match at Hinkley GC on Tuesday, 14 May. Anyone that may be interested in playing matches that I have not spoken to, please drop me a line. The Charity Captains Bunker has now been moved to the 18th hole front forward left bunker and will shortly have new signage both in the bunker and on the Tee. The purpose being that any balls, members or non-members, landing in the bunker contribute 50p to the Captains Charity pot, Myton Hospice, which will be sitting on the bar with more signing. It would be great to see more members signing up for our Summer Barn Dance on Saturday, 29 June in the clubhouse. The band is booked and food sorted for up to 100 guests (members and non-members). Currently we only have around 30 names confirmed, so we need more of you to let your hair down for a fun club evening. Tickets are £20 per head, so please let myself, Carol McKinney or Tom Waldron have your names as soon as possible. Finally, on a similar note I will be finalising names for my Captains Away Weekend to Hawkstone Park GC on the 14th/15th September. The sign-up sheet is on the noticeboard and I will need confirmation deposits by the end of this month. Thank you for your time and enjoy your golf. Andrew Burton WGC Captain 2019.
