Captain's log The Welcombe Golf Club 2019 Golf Season – Andrew Burton, Captain Thankfully, the ‘Captains Drive-In’ on Sunday was accomplished without any embarrassment or tears from any of us. The new Lady Captain, Carol McKinney led the way with a drive of 164 yards followed by the Seniors Captain, Mark Scruby with a drive of 202 yards, and finally my drive of 212 yards with all balls positioned perfectly on the fairway. Normal service was then resumed for the rest of our respective rounds! I would like to thank everybody that supported the event for their generosity with my first event raising £300, which is a great start for my charity year. Even this amount of money is sufficient to fund 25 patient’s meals for a day at the Hospice. Congratulations to Jake Day who pipped my ‘nearest the pin’ ball on the 14th to win a pair of FootJoy Pro/SL holf shoes and to Dave Boyd and Dale Prime who were the only two players to ‘beat the Pro’ from a difficult back tee 6th hole.
Well done to Jake Day and our Avon League team for kicking off their season with a halved match away at Rugby. I’m in the process of organising our club matches for Sunday, 19 May with our first match at home against The Warwickshire on Saturday, 4 May (now oversubscribed), an away match at Hinkley on Tuesday, 14 May (need a few more players) and an away match at Maxstoke on Tuesday, 28 May (need a few more players). Hopefully, I have now managed to contact everybody that may have shown an interest in playing but apologies if not and please do make contact with me if you want to play in any matches. The Charity Captains Bunker (originally on the 14th) and over recent years redundant from raising any money is being moved to the 18th hole front left bunker (plenty of you have visited it!). The purpose being that any balls, members or non-members, landing in the bunker contribute 50p to the Captains Charity pot which will be sitting on the bar. Hopefully being on the 18th hole, even those players with poor memories, may remember their penalty payment! Also, I will be introducing a monthly draw with a £1 entry to win a sleeve of Titleist Pro V1 balls. Simply write your name against a number in the box and at the end of each month we will draw for the winner. Entry sheet in pro shop. To liven up the summer evenings, please look out for the forthcoming promotion of our WGC Barn Dance on Saturday, 29 June in the clubhouse. The band is booked and food sorted so we just need around 100 guests (members and non-members) happy to prance up and down the dance floor in their checked shirts and cowboy hats. Tomorrow I have a day out on the course with Billy and his Greenkeeping team to get a better personal understanding of their operation and challenges. I’m hoping this will prove useful for my knowledge and understanding of how The Welcombe Complex works and any financial constraints holding back important course activity. Unfortunately, I’m unable to participate in this weekends rearranged ‘Colin Blinkhorne competition’ as myself and a few other hardy WGC members will be taking on The Bruce and Ailsa courses at Turnberry. Thank you for your time and enjoy your golf. Andrew Burton WGC Captain 2019.
