Welcombe Senior's 2018 season round up Last week's visit to Stratford Park bought the Welcombe Senior's club matches and competitive aspects of the 2018 season to a close. Over the last five or so months, many seniors have enjoyed playing in the fourteen senior club matches, splitting the honours by winning and losing seven a piece. The most unfortunate part of the year was having to cancel two home matches due to lack of players. On the plus side, five of the seven wins were away from home, the down side being that we lost four at home, but at least that gives us something to be improved upon next year. The most rewarding match was retaining The Hallmark Challenge Trophy away at The Cambridgeshire, which was the first time any away team has won the trophy. The most successful player throughout the season's matches, contributing most points in proportion to appearances, was Dave Parker, winning eight and halving one of the eleven matches he played in. Dave was closely followed by Tom Lindsay who won six and halved one of his nine matches. Well done both and thanks! My Senior Captain's away day was held in early June at Bank House Golf Club at Bransford near Worcester. Club President Patrick Holmes was our special guest as a mark of his long association with Brandford GC. There was an overall team prize, but the nearest the pin competition was won by Joe Harvey with the longest drive prize going to John Keeley. The overall individual winner was the ever consistent Graeme Hogg. The win appears to have set him up for a very good season as he also performed well in the senior club matches he played in. The senior board competitions were eagerly contested throughout the summer season with the following results: - The Norman Lee Trophy (senior singles knockout) was won by Dave Sheppard with Keith Lazenby being runner up.
- The Herald Trophy (senior pairs knockout) was won by John Wyatt & Michael Dean and with runners up being Dennis James and Richard White.
- The Caledonian Quaich, (seniors Club Champion) was won by Richard Grimston with runner up Dennis James.
With many participants taking part in each of the senior board competitions and more than 30 members playing in one or more of our friendly senior club matches, the good foundation of the seniors section has been strengthened throughout the year, although of course, more participants will always be welcomed, especially for the club matches. I would like to thank everyone that took part in any of the senior board competitions, senior matches and my Captain's away day throughout the summer. I hope you continue to enjoy some good golf and weather throughout the winter in readiness for another great year supporting our 2019 Senior's Captain, Mark Scruby. |
Captain's log Dear All, Well, we completed the last of our Club Friendlies on Saturday; our home match against Hearsall. There is always a good set of lads who love coming to the Welcs and they told me it’s their favourite venue and friendly match of the year – that might also have to do with them going on the pop into Stratford in the evening (mandatory if you want to play in their team).
The weather looked set to make it a miserable affair, but fortunately the worst of it had gone through by the time we eventually teed off (we just about made it back in before the light went completely), which naturally I’m blaming entirely for losing our particular match on the 18th. It was nothing at all to do with the fact that I was mostly poor on the day - Poor old Kristian, good job it wasn’t our first game together! However, fortunately the rest of the boys delivered handsomely with the first three matches recording 4&3 wins, so we triumphed 4 ½ / 1 ½ at the finish. So, our unbeaten home record stands, winning 12 and drawing just the one – brilliant Stuff. A huge thanks for everyone who played and supported these fixtures. I know they can impinge sometimes on your other arrangements and sacrifices are made to play in them, but it’s a great feeling when we get a bunch of guys together and everyone pulls the stops out to get a win and keep the run going! We have the Presentation night coming up soon and I will have the Captains Player of the year award – I don’t know what it is yet or who’s won it (as I’ve just thought of it) and I don’t even know what it is yet, but someone will have won it! In other matters, we’ll soon be entering the winter months and no doubt that will provide Billy and the team with more challenges. I have been meeting with Tom, Andy and Dan who is the General manager and discussing all matters including the course condition and the ongoing improvements that have been carried out to the irrigation and more recently, a good number of the bunkers. Obviously, Billy will detail the works he’s carrying out – but I understand Andy is going to be carrying out regular course walks with Billy, to look at the more specific areas of concern and we still wait to hear some hopefully good news on the capex budget for the next 12 months. This would allow some of the more pressing issues to be hastened and carried out ahead of the spring next year. Obviously, what I’m describing is a lot of input and effort now as the weather has finally started to allow, with the results coming through once we get the dreaded winter months out of the way. We do have a liaison meeting on Wednesday 17th October, which takes in all the main contributors / Important Folk to the club’s well-being. If any of you have any thoughts or comments which you think could help or should be considered then you can email me before next Wednesday on; nealtugman@icloud.com. I can’t promise to represent everyone’s views but if we have enough with a similar message, then obviously we’d be keen to hear what you have to say & I will do my best to represent those comments at the meeting. On the course, we have our next Challenge on Sunday 28th October for the Avon League Challenge Cup – At home against The Abbey. I will be in touch shortly to start the recruitment process for that! All the best in the meantime and I hope the weather doesn’t wreck this weekend’s golf too much – not withstanding everyone looks forward to their weekend’s golf - we also have the Captains Baffy to play for! Cheers, Neal

Head Greenkeepers Report October 11th 2018 Hello to all members and guests,
This week as you were all aware our greens renovations have taken place on all 18 greens and practice surfaces. This is an annual maintenance event, which takes place to improve the surfaces. Staff have put in many hours to ensure we had the greens finished as quick as possible, and I’d like to thank the lads for their great workmanship again as a team. I apologise for any upsets or holes closed this week when you were playing. We thank you for cooperation moving to the next holes. Many thanks.
We have Verti-drained all greens at a depth 10 inch. Hollow cored greens at a depth of 5-inch, verticut, seeded and fertilized. Surfaces were then top dressed in sand and then our procore aerator punched the sand into the greens to maximise the depth of sand within our soil profile. Each day from now we are brushing the sand into the greens, cutting and rolling. Please be patient, the greens will take a week to recover and seed will start to germinate with the warm wet weather we are expecting. Irrigation will be on a small cycle to wash the greens each night. The next greens maintenance will be end of March 2019. Next week we will be renovating all the tees, this will be a similar process with the greens. No holes will be shut off for this, you will all be asked to play at the front to let us proceed with work. Thank you. All work undertaken from now will be to improve for the 2019 season. We are all hoping for a busy winter with a lot of maintenance work up until April 2019. Areas of the course are starting to build up with a heavy fall of leaves, we will be doing our best to keep areas tidy daily to ensure speed of play is good and lost balls are kept to a minimum.
Bunker work will commence again start of November.
Filled in bunker left of 4th green is now GUR.
Can I please ask everyone to repair pitch marks on greens and divots around the course especially on fairways. I hope you are all continuing to enjoy your golf at The Welcombe golf club. On behalf of myself and the greenkeeping team, we would like to thank you all for your continued support.
Many Thanks Billy Hayes Head greenkeeper The Welcombe golf resort

Sometimes it's nice to reminisce about the good times. When it comes to golf, the days of persimmon woods, small clubheads and hitting balls which were hard as a rock are long gone - but it can help to take a trip down memory lane to remind us of just how much technology has developed, particularly in the case of drivers. |
Time tunnel
Take TaylorMade for example; you might have been lucky enough to own its iconic r7 Quad driver way back in 2004. The r7 was memorable for introducing the then-revolutionary concept of changeable weights in a driver, which was a massive shift from the conventional 'one weight fits all' approach. The r7 Quad is a classic club, and is certainly remembered with fondness. Fast-forward to the present day and TaylorMade has released its most technologically advanced driver to date in the form of the M3. The M3 really shows just how far we've come in terms of moveable weights, with a Y-Track feature that allows golfers to adjust their settings for optimal trajectory, maximum forgiveness, or less spin. So, whilst it is nice to think about your first ever driver, it's probably time to get up to speed with the latest models such as the M3. Who knows? Maybe in another 10 years time, you'll be looking back on the M3 with as much fondness as the r7 Quad! |
