Seniors match at Stratford Park The Welcombe Seniors travelled the short distance up the lane to Stratford Park for the last match in each other’s season. The course was in fine condition having been watered throughout the recent long dry summer, with greens running fast and true while the trees were still holding onto many of their leaves. A number of the Welcombe pairings got off to poor starts, sloppy play being punished by the home team's excellent course management. But after a combination of taking a good look at themselves and a little backside kicking most managed to get themselves back on terms making for close competitive games. At the turn most, matches were finely balanced with both sides being too polite to take a significant lead. As the individual contests swung one way then the other, pressure increased as each match drew to a close, three of them not being settled until the last hole. Unfortunately, for the visitors, the home team registered victory after victory, avoiding a Welcombe whitewash rested on the last match, unfortunately not for the first time this season. The final pairing of Parker/Hogg saving our collective face with a convincing 3&2 win. Thank you chaps! The final loss of 5 to 1 was understandable when it became known that the Stratford Park Seniors rounded off a fine season by losing only two of their fourteen matches. Roll on next season. Many thanks, regards Martin.
