Seniors Captains Report Last weekend a dedicated party of Welcombe Seniors travelled to Cambridge to play the Cambridgeshire Golf Club in an attempt to retain the Hallmark Challenge Trophy. On Sunday, with the aim of familiarising themselves with the course before the Trophy match on Monday, the Welcombe seniors played a sociable Stableford amongst themselves. The course appeared to be standing up reasonably well in spite of the lack of recent rain but conditions were not improved due to the searing heat on what can only be expected to be the hottest day Cambridgeshire has seen in years.
Against the odds an enjoyable, but somewhat long round was had by everyone with a nearest the pin prize going to Vic Cooper, a longest drive prize going to Andrew Ferguson but the overall winner, with a very creditable 39 points was Richard White. The sociable theme continued post-match over a lemonade or two and dinner with most of the highly trained seniors retiring for an early night.
Monday morning arrived hot and sunny, and so our seasoned team once again took to the course in a bid to retain the Trophy which has always been won by the host team. Predictably the individual matches progressed with the usual give and take until one by one they returned for a cool drink and light lunch in the club house. Initial results did not go well for the Welcombe who after the first four matches were in trailed 1 1/2 to 2 1/2. But a strong rear-guard delivered the goods with great wins from the pairings of Shearsby/McLoughlin, Reid/Hogg, Cooper/Steele and finally Cazaly/Lee to give overall victory to the Welcombe of 4 1/2 to 3 1/2, the crucial 1/2 being delivered by the pairing of Keeley/Ferguson. The final result was met with a short if embarrassing chorus of 'It’s coming home' before the Welcombe troops bid their hosts farewell to hit the traffic.
The next senior's event is an away match at Fulford Heath on Tuesday 17th July.
