Greetings golfers,

I hope you've all had a fantastic week on and off the golf course and welcome to another exciting edition of the weekly newsletter, bringing you up-to-date with all the latest news and gossip.

Club news

Club Championship

There were 75 members which entered into this year’s Club Championship, which is the biggest turnout ever for the club. The course was in fantastic condition but the players had to contend with some blustery and wet weather conditions during Saturday’s round one, with a much calmer and dryer Sunday.

Congratulations to Ben Smallman for retaining his Club Championship title for the third year in a row. Ben has been a member at the Welcombe Golf Club for ten years starting his golfing venture at the age of ten. During this time Ben has won the Club Championship three times, Order of Merit twice, the Welcombe Salver Championship, Captains Cup and maintaining a handicap as low as two.

Ben will be turning Professional at the end of September and we wish him all the best. Who knows, we may all be watching him taking on Jordan Spieth on one of the Major golf tours in a few years’ time.

Captains' Cup

The Captains’ Cup is another Major competition run alongside the Club Championship. This year’s winner was Mark McKinney getting the best nett score over the two days.

Mark played some great golf over the weekend with a nett score of 133, which just managed to stop Ben from winning the double by one shot.

Mark was delighted to get his name on the board and trophy for the first time, which will feature at the club forever. Well done Mark!

The Open

The 146th Open Championship

The greats find a way to get it done, and Jordan Spieth's rollercoaster third Major title suggests he is on an exalted path in the game of golf.

In 50 agonizing and exhilarating minutes, the 23 year-old almost blew another Major in scenes reminiscent of his Masters meltdown last year, before scrapping back in majestic fashion to win the 146th Open at Royal Birkdale.

Trophy Engravers

If any member could recommend a local Engravers I can use to update all our trophies at the golf club, please let me know.

New menu

The new Welcombe Golf Club menu will be Launched on Monday, 31 August. To whet your appetite a few of the Chefs Favourites include: 

• The Hallmark Burger- 6oz beef patty with a glazed Red Leicester and mature cheddar rarebit. 
• Curious Fish and Chips- Fresh Haddock fillet in a Curious beer batter served with chunky chips, mushy peas and a tartare sauce.
• Sticky Honey and Mustard Glazed Chicken Skewers- Served with a soy and rice wine dip.

Our Chef will be doing FREE tasters on Saturday, 5 August for you to sample different dishes on the menu.

 
 
 
That's got some face on it

It’s hard not to be in awe of the putting we see on TV, especially when the world’s best are competing for a major like at last week’s Open Championship. Yes, their strokes are close to perfect, but today’s putters also have a lot of technology in the face to aid the smooth roll they all love to put on the ball.

How do you compare?

You will have heard us mention the importance of the ‘scoring zone’ on various occasions, but we can’t stress enough just how vital this area is to lowering your scores. Take a close look at these up-and-down charts below:
